d’bi.young anitafrika, affectionately known as d’bi., is an internationally celebrated Jamaican dubpoet, monodramatist, and educator whose socially conscious performance art has left an indelible mark on the global psyche. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, d’bi. moved to Canada in 1993 and exploded onto the Canadian theater scene in 2001 as a remarkable storyteller in ‘da kink in my hair’, which played at London’s Hackney Empire Theatre in 2006 and has toured globally.

Since then, d’bi. has written eight plays, including solitary, yagayah (published), androgyne (excerpt published), she, domestic, and the sankofa trilogy, featuring the award-winning monodramas blood.claat, benu, and word! sound! powah! Her groundbreaking Biomyth Sorplusi Method, which aids artists worldwide in developing personal integrity in their art-making, is practiced in over eight countries.

In recent years, d’bi. has continued to expand her artistic and educational impact. She founded the Watah Theatre, an artist residency program in Toronto dedicated to nurturing Black, Indigenous, and diverse artists. She also launched the Anitafrika Retreat Centre in Jamaica, offering workshops and retreats focused on wellness, creativity, and social justice. d’bi. has received numerous accolades, including the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Celebration of Cultural Life Award.

d’bi.’s work has been produced at numerous prestigious venues, including Canadian theaters like Passe Muraille, Buddies in Bad Times, GCTC, and Firehall. Internationally, her performances have graced stages such as London’s Free Word Centre, Barcelona’s CCCB, Havana’s Teatro Nacional, Cape Town’s City Hall, India’s Counter Culture, Belfast’s Metropolitan Arts Centre, Kingston Jamaica’s Edna Manley College, and Barbados’s Queen’s Park. Through her powerful art and educational initiatives, d’bi. continues to inspire and empower artists and audiences worldwide, promoting socially-conscious storytelling and the transformative power of performance art.
